Defending champion Rory McIlroy has failed to make the halfway cut in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

The Holywood player missed the cut by three shots after firing a level-par 72 to follow his opening 75 on Thursday.

McIlroy carded five birdies and five bogeys in the second round on Friday to finish three over.

Dubliner Padraig Harrington is three under after a 72 while American Pat Perez leads by two shots on 12 under.

McIlroy was still in with a chance of making the cut until he dropped shots on 17 and 18.
