BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero to be revealed in December

Unsung Hero

The nomination stage for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year's Unsung Hero 2020 awards has closed (deadline 25 October, 23:59 GMT)

We have seen an incredible response to this year's call for your sporting unsung heroes, reflecting the contribution sport has continued to make to our communities in difficult times. Thank you.

The judging will now begin, with 15 finalists for the Unsung Hero award being forwarded to the final panel, where Olympic legends and leading figures in the community sport sector will select the winner. The panel will also select our inaugural Captain Tom Young Unsung Hero.

Winners will be announced live on BBC One at BBC Sports Personality of the Year in December.

Raising money for Children in Need

You can still download the charity single Every One of Us, Rick Astley featuring The Unsung Heroes, with proceeds going to Children in Need.

Astley said: "When I was asked to launch a single in honour of Unsung Hero and to raise money for BBC Children in Need I didn't hesitate.

"Both are brilliant causes and I hope the song can bring a bit of joy and solidarity during what has been a strange and unprecedented year."

All of BMG's net profits from this single (with a minimum of 50p per download) will benefit BBC Children in Need (charity number 802052 in England & Wales and SC039557 in Scotland).

How is the award decided?

Your Unsung Heroes are judged by your BBC nation or region, using the criteria detailed in the Terms and Conditions and 15 winners are announced at this stage.

Your Captain Tom Young Unsung Hero nominations are judged at the same judging panel. The winners will be announced live at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
