Managerless Port Vale gave their supporters something to smile about with a battling 2-0 home victory over Bristol Rovers.

Goals from Ellis Harrison and Tom Pett did the damage as the Valiants ended a miserable run of eight games without a win.

Striker Harrison gave the home side the perfect start when he smashed home from close range.

Midfielder Pett then doubled the lead with a sweet left-foot strike into the bottom left corner.

Forward James Wilson could have made it 3-0, but keeper Jed Ward denied him with a good save.

Antony Evans shot wide for Rovers as they looked to get back into the contest shortly after the break, before Funso Ojo had a shot saved for Vale.

John Marquis headed agonisingly off target for Rovers as another chance went begging and Aaron Collins smashed over from distance.

Marquis wasted another decent chance late on when he shot wide as Joey Barton's side saw their winless run extended to three games.

    So the players looked like they were on the beach, does that mean the next 4 games aren't worth playing ,gas? For me it's pride and finishing as high up the table , feel for the traveling fans today. Big up to Vale for the 16th minute applause ,class. UTG

    This win has been coming over the last few games but we just weren’t getting the rub of the green. Defended stoically with Rovers not registering a shot on target. Glad to see both of these promoted sides will be in L1 next season. UTV.

    Well done Vale, honestly could not see us staying up if Clarke had stayed, I hope Crosby is given a chance instead of one of these recently sacked managers who’ve failed at this level. Improvements will need to be made as next season will be harder when you look at the size of the teams going down compared to the ones coming up. Both Wilson and Proctor sadly need to be moved on, never fit 5 goals

    When Flitcroft talked his way into the Vale he boasted his connection would bring a host of young loanees to the club, I’m still waiting! He’s surrounded himself with so many staff, a recruitment team coaches coaching coaches, it’s difficult to see what he does. He was instrumental in giving Clarke a 5 year deal, he was behind groundsman Steve Speed being replaced at great expense for what because

    Good performance and result by two clear goals !! AC has to be given the managers job; he was class last season and has proved that he can grind out results. If there is no money for players in the summer then next season is going to be hard no matter who is in the dug out and grinding out results will be the name of the game. UTV

    Flitcroft is now after replacing Speed is saying players don’t want to join the club because of the state of the pitch. He goes on about being Championship ready, to me the ground isn’t running at almost half capacity, the pitch isn’t to his own admission. We are however on off the field staffing and wages, Flitcroft has been an expensive disaster. Suits, training grounds he’s laugh at our expense

      Flitcroft talks clap trap all mouth, take it from a Barnsley fan, miraculously kept us in the championship as caretaker in 2013 it took 55pts, played hardball in the summer took the job but only conditional, started taking the team to lavish overnight stays night before away games and wanting the team to fly, the guys got a track record, absolute fraudulent mouth piece.

    Losing to an out-of-form, managerless club with goals and assists by a player who go knew better than to stay at the Crem, sums up an dreadful season only matched by suffering the country’s least likeable manager.

    Meanwhile, City win with 6 homegrown players in side. Fantastic.

    As Julius Caesar famously said as he landed on our shores in AD43 “crapus mind the gapus”
