Arbroath 2-0 Greenock Morton: League runners-up head into play-offs with win

A freshened up Arbroath prepared for the Scottish Premiership play-offs with a comfortable win over Greenock Morton.

Jason Thomson had an easy finish from close range after Liam Henderson's header came back off the crossbar.

The Red Lichties' second came when James Craigen headed in his third in three games following brilliant trickery on the left by Bobby Linn.

Late on, Michael McKenna headed home his 16th goal of the season from Nicky Low's corner.

Arbroath made nine changes to their starting XI, while Morton made eight, in a match that had little at stake.

Dick Campbell's side now have a 10-day wait until they visit either Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Partick Thistle in the Premiership play-off semi-final first leg. The second leg is on 13 May.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "Freshened up? That's an understatement - I brought nine players in because I thought about it for two or three nights and thought, what if I play the ones who have been playing every week and they get injured or sent off, and also thought I need to be fair to the rest of the players.

"And they have all sent a clear message to me that they want to be here next season and they are wanting to play - I thought they were excellent. We should have scored more and I am regenerated after being a bit empty after the Kilmarnock game."

Greenock Morton manager Dougie Imrie: "We lost to a very good team. Disappointed to lose any game. It's been a disappointing end to the season - three defeats on the bounce.

"I'm immensely proud of my boys. What they've given me since I came through the door in December has been nothing short of remarkable. We've got a job on our hands. We need to get players in. It'll be tough. Everybody's fighting for players."
