Gateshead 0-2 Charlton Athletic: Jayden Stockley double sinks sixth-tier Gateshead

League One Charlton Athletic saw off a spirited performance from National League North side Gateshead to reach the FA Cup third round.

Jayden Stockley opened the scoring for the Addicks, heading home Conor Washington's cross in the 30th minute.

And Charlton doubled their advantage after the break when Ben Purrington's volley deflected in off Stockley.

Gateshead created numerous chances, with forward Macauley Langstaff blazing wildly over the bar when one-on-one with goalkeeper Stephen Henderson in the second half.

Henderson then made a superb double point-blank save late on to deny Jack Hunter and Louis Storey after player-manager Mike Williamson's looping header had hit the bar.

The Addicks saw out the last few minutes to reach round three for the second time in six seasons.

Victory also marked a seventh win in 11 matches since boss Johnnie Jackson was appointed caretaker manager, as the former Charlton midfielder continues to impress in the dugout.

The draw for the third round takes place on Monday at 19:00 GMT.

Charlton caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson told BBC Radio London:

"It wasn't an easy night's work, they're a good side and they caused us problems. But we're through and that's the most important thing.

"It can be a lose-lose situation because we're expected to win. You're never expecting to blow them away because of the nature of the game. Friday night under the lights, it's difficult.

"We'll take whoever we get in the next round. Whoever we get, big or small, we'll be taking the next game very seriously."

Gateshead player-manager Mike Williamson told BBC Radio Newcastle:

"We've got to take a lot of confidence from it. I'm extremely proud of the lads, that never give up attitude, it's fantastic to work with that. Ultimately sometimes you're going to come up short.

"We missed opportunities and they [the players] are going to feel it more than anyone. But we conceded two, they were avoidable and we need to look back on both sides.

"The crowd were fantastic. They fully turned up and we heard them, it was brilliant."
