Match ends, Burnley 4, Rochdale 1.
Burnley's Jay Rodriguez scored all four goals as the Clarets secured their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with an ultimately comfortable win over Rochdale.
The League Two visitors took a shock lead through Jake Beesley just after half-time but Burnley responded immediately.
Rodriguez flicked in a header from new signing Maxwel Cornet's corner three minutes later and the 32-year-old then scored on 60, 62, and 77 minutes to complete a goalscoring masterclass.
When Beesley drilled the ball into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Nick Pope to break the deadlock, it looked like there could have been a cup upset on the cards at Turf Moor.
But that prospect proved short-lived as Rodriguez turned the game around, equalising before scoring from Matej Vydra's pass to fire the Clarets ahead.
A bullet header from Ashley Westwood's cross completed his hat-trick.
Sean Dyche's side continued to press and Aaron Lennon's cross from close range found Rodriguez to bundle home his fourth.
With his work done, Rodriguez was replaced by Chris Wood with 10 minutes remaining.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "Without over-egging it I thought it was job done from the beginning.
"Jay has looked sharp, particularly second half. First half, his movement was good and he didn't quite find a chance, second half he spent more time in the middle of the pitch and the box and was effective, so I'm pleased for him."
Rochdale boss Robbie Stockdale: "To come to a Premier League club with such a young team and express ourselves the way we did, I was really pleased.
"We took the lead and I wish we could have held on to that longer, but ultimately their Premier League class came to the surface.
"We got them worried, didn't we?"
