QPR 2-2 Everton (8-7 pens): Rafael Benitez's side knocked out by Championship QPR on penalties

Championship side QPR upset Premier League Everton on penalties to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

The Toffees twice came from behind inside 90 minutes, with Lucas Digne and Andros Townsend cancelling out two Charlie Austin headers.

The shootout went to sudden death, with both sides scoring their first seven spot-kicks.

QPR keeper Seny Dieng then pushed a Tom Davies effort onto the post, before Jimmy Dunne won it for the hosts.

There was drama just before that as Dieng had saved Ben Godfrey's penalty, but the referee ordered a retake for encroachment.

Godfrey made amends for the miss by scoring at the second attempt, but team-mate Davies saw his penalty - Everton's eighth - saved by Dieng before QPR centre-back Dunne crashed in his effort.

It is the first time since 2008 that QPR have reached the fourth round of the competition.

After going unbeaten in their first four Premier League games, Rafael Benitez's side have now lost two matches on the bounce.

QPR manager Mark Warburton: "To a man our players deserve so much credit. The penalties from both teams were high quality, but they showed great character. It's what a cup tie is about and it was a great evening for the fans."

Everton manager Rafael Benitez: "It's always bad to go out, it doesn't matter how. The game had a lot of intensity and in the second half we had enough chances to win the game. With these kinds of games if you do enough to win, you have to be disappointed."
