Match ends, Brighton and Hove Albion Women 3, Bristol City Women 1.
Bristol City have been relegated from the Women's Super League after losing to Brighton.
The Robins started the day bottom of the table and knew they would have to win to stand any chance of staying up.
However, they fell behind early on to Maya Le Tissier's close-range finish.
Lee Geum-min rattled home a second after the break before Abi Harrison bundled in from close range to reduce the deficit, only for Inessa Kaagman's deflected free-kick to seal it.
To their credit, Matt Beard's side did not give up after falling two behind and briefly threatened an unlikely comeback when Harrison made it 2-1 but they came up short and ultimately finished two points adrift of second-bottom Birmingham City.
For Hope Powell's Brighton, two wins from their final four games secured a sixth-placed finish, their best in the WSL.
Season of struggle ends in relegation
Relegation had always looked likely in a very tough season for Bristol City.
They managed just two wins from their 22 league games and conceded 72 goals, 25 more than anyone else.
They were bottom with just two points from their opening 10 games when former West Ham boss Beard took over until the end of the campaign, after Tanya Oxtoby went off on maternity leave in January.
Beard led them to two wins from his first five matches in charge to move off the foot of the table on 8 March.
That was as good as it got though as they failed to win any of their final seven matches and return to the second tier after four seasons back in the top flight.
