Norwich City 0-1 Watford: Hornets move closer to promotion

Dan Gosling scores against Norwich
Dan Gosling scored his second goal since joining Watford from Bournemouth in January

Watford moved a step closer to an immediate return to the Premier League with victory at already promoted Norwich City.

Norwich keeper Tim Krul made three good saves in the first half, keeping out an angled shot from Ismaila Sarr with his legs and then pulling off a double stop to claw away Ken Sema's low effort and deny the Senegal winger on the follow-up.

Dan Gosling broke the deadlock and put the Hornets ahead when he converted Joao Pedro's low ball into the middle 12 minutes after the restart.

The Canaries, who could have clinched the Championship title with victory at Carrow Road, struggled to create chances but Mario Vrancic shot straight at visiting keeper Daniel Bachmann deep into second-half stoppage time.

Second-placed Watford need a maximum of three more points from their final three games to secure promotion to the top flight after Brentford drew against Cardiff and Swansea lost against QPR.

The Hornets started energetically, with an unmarked Gosling heading wide and Sarr flashing an effort off target from inside the box. Sarr also had a decent shout for a penalty turned down after going to ground in a tussle with Canaries left-back Xavi Quintilla.

Norwich responded as Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell both had long-range efforts deflected over the bar before Krul was called into action three times in the space of five minutes to keep it goalless.

The hosts were largely subdued compared to their recent form, which had seen them win 11 times in a 13-match unbeaten run, and a last-ditch tackle from Grant Hanley prevented Andre Gray from doubling Watford's advantage 15 minutes from time.

The Norfolk side have now lost both their games since promotion to the Premier League was secured on Saturday afternoon and Daniel Farke's men still need five points to pip Watford to the title.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke:

"It was not our best game of the season although the performance would have been good enough to take points against many sides in this league.

"But it was not enough against a highly motivated Watford side. If you are not at your top level against them it will always be difficult.

"You have to respect their quality and congratulate them on the win.

"What we need to do now is make sure we get the points we need to win the title."

Watford head coach Xisco Munoz:

"Norwich are a very good side and we have now beaten them twice this season, which is very important for us. It was a good performance and I thought it was a deserved win.

"Everyone is moving in the right direction, everyone is working hard. There is big confidence in the team.

"I have every confidence in the ability of this squad and there is also great team spirit in the group.

"We are very pleased with this result but we have to stay 100 per cent focused."
