Manchester City 1-0 Everton: Keira Walsh scores superb late winner

Keira Walsh scored a sumptuous late winner as Manchester City finally broke down a supremely organised Everton defence to keep the pressure on Women's Super League leaders Chelsea.

Neither side managed an attempt on target until Walsh's measured first-time 20-yard strike on 81 minutes.

Everton, who stay fifth, had defended impressively against below-par City.

But relentless spells of possession were rewarded as Walsh earned a seventh successive win in all competitions.

City's ninth straight WSL victory saw them top the table for just over an hour, but Chelsea regained their place at the summit with a routine win over West Ham United.

City, the league's top scorers with 50 goals, lacked creativity and were second best during the early stages at Academy Stadium.

But they began to dominate possession and Sam Mewis and Ellen White both missed good chances.

The best opportunity came when Caroline Weir's free-kick fell kindly to Mewis just three yards out, but the American made a mess of her finish and side-footed wide.

But Walsh's fine strike from Lauren Hemp's cross brought a vital win for City, who face Fiorentina in the second leg of the last 16 of the Champions League in Florence on Thursday.

Gareth Taylor's side are 3-0 up from the first meeting.
