Match ends, Dundalk 1, Molde 2.
Molde produced a strong second-half performance to come back from a goal down and beat Dundalk in the Europa League group stage opener.
The hosts were ahead at the break thanks to a fine Sean Murray header, but Etzaz Hussain equalised with a deflected effort just after the hour.
Ohi Omoijuanfo scored the winner with a penalty on 72 minutes after Sean Gannon brought Erling Knudtzon down.
The Lilywhites' next match in Group B is away to Arsenal next Thursday.
With Dundalk's Oriel Park ground unable to host Europa League group games, Thursday evening's encounter took place in Dublin's Tallaght Stadium, home of Shamrock Rovers,
The Aviva Stadium was not available because of the Ireland rugby team's preparations for Saturday's Six Nations match against Italy, but the League of Ireland side's next two homes games in the group, Rapid Vienna and Arsenal on 26 November and 10 December. will be played there.
Both sides started the match in cautious fashion, committing very few men forward and creating hardly any goalscoring opportunities.
The first major incident came in the 24th minute when the Lilywhites thought they had taken the lead. Patrick Hoban squeezed a header inside the post but it was disallowed for a foul on Martin Bjornbak as he rose for the header.
Murray's goal arrived in the 35th minute thanks to a fine move down the right, which saw Mountney play a neat one-two with Gannon before delivering an excellent cross.
Murray, who also scored in Dundalk's play-off victory over KI Klaksvík to qualify for the group stage, found space to meet the ball in the air and guide a well-placed header into the far bottom corner past goalkeeper Andreas Linde.
The visitors had almost gone ahead just a few minutes before the opening goal when a cleared corner fell to Stian Gregersen, but his long-range shot grazed the outside of the post as it sailed wide.
Molde, previously managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær before he took over at Manchester United, were vastly improved after the break as they took control of the game from early in the second half.
Their equaliser came on 62 minutes when Pedersen cut the ball back from the right and Hussain met it with a shot from the edge of the box that deflected in off Darragh Leahy.
Ten minutes later, Knudtzon got in behind Gannon, who brought the substitute down, and Omoijuanfo, who had a quiet game, produced an assured finish into the corner to hand the visitors a deserved win.
