Norwich City 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers: Mario Vrancic hands Wycombe seventh straight defeat

Mario Vrancic has scored 15 goals for Norwich since joining them from SV Darmstadt in 2017

Mario Vrancic's stoppage-time goal for Norwich City handed Wycombe Wanderers their seventh straight Championship defeat and leaves them still without a point.

The midfielder bent home a sublime free-kick in the first minute of added time, his second match-winning goal in three days after scoring in midweek against Birmingham.

The Canaries had taken an early lead through Teemu Pukki before Scott Kashket levelled for Wanderers with their first away goal of the season.

Adam Idah was sent off for Norwich after Vrancic's goal for lashing out at Joe Jacobsen but it made no difference to the final result.

Hosts Norwich dominated for long periods against a side who are finding their first-ever season in the second tier hugely tough, but this time they looked like they had done enough to come away with a point.

Wycombe's defensive frailties, which has seen them concede a Championship-high 15 goals so far, were exposed with Pukki's opener, with the Finn latching onto Emi Buendia's through ball and taking advantage of a slip by goalkeeper Ryan Allsop to fire in.

But they were not in front for long as Kashket punished more poor defending as he poked in David Wheeler's flick on.

The Chairboys thought they had a decent shout for a penalty when Ben Gibson appeared to tug Fred Onyedinma but it was turned down.

Pukki, Todd Cantwell and Grant Hanley all had chances to put Norwich back in front after the break, with Hanley seeing his header cleared off the line by Daryl Horgan.

However, Norwich finally took one of their numerous opportunities to score as Vrancic was tripped by Onyedinma on the edge of the area before giving Allsop little chance with a pinpoint free-kick.

Idah's red card in the 95th minute took some of the gloss off victory for Norwich, who move up to fourth, while Wycombe already appear to be locked in a relegation battle.

Norwich manager Daniel Farke told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"If I'm honest it's just good to win the game when the games are coming thick and fast but there's no doubt it was a deserved win.

"Credit to Wycombe, they had nothing to lose and especially in the second half they were not far away. They defended with passion so credit to Gareth.

"For us, at times, we were out in our passing accuracy and were not able to dominate the game but I'm just pleased we were able to find a way to win."

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties:

"That team is designed to go straight back up to the Premier League so what a fantastic performance we've given today.

"How we haven't got a penalty is beyond me. We're not getting the decisions at the moment and hopefully they'll turn soon because the lads deserve it.

"If we keep playing like that, there's going to be no doubt we'll be staying in the Championship."
