Women's Super League: Reading 0-1 Birmingham City - Blues record first win of season

Birmingham City stunned Reading to record their first win and first points of the Women's Super League season.

Claudia Walker scored against the run of play midway through the second half from a Sarah Mayling cross.

Reading dominated the chances before then, which included Lauren Bruton's shot being blocked on the goalline.

The win was a first victory for Blues under new head coach Carla Ward and inflicted Reading's second loss of the season after back-to-back wins.

Birmingham were also indebted to goalkeeper Hannah Hampton for keeping them in the game as she made a full-length stop in the first half from Jess Fishlock's 30-yard shot.

Brooke Chaplen also went close for the Royals in both halves with a shot over the bar and a free-kick which grazed the roof of the net, but their best chance arguably fell to Bruton moments before Walker gave Blues the lead.

She was unable to get the ball out of her feet to finish from close range and as it trickled towards goal, Georgia Brougham made the last-ditch clearance on the line for the visitors.

After the game's only goal, Reading could not find a leveller with Natasha Harding glancing a header narrowly wide in stoppage time.
