Huddersfield Town 2-0 Queens Park Rangers: Elias Kachunga and Steve Mounie on target for Terriers

Huddersfield's Elias Kachunga put the Terriers ahead with a 57th-minute header before winning a penalty three minutes later

Huddersfield moved six points clear of the Championship relegation zone as goals from Elias Kachunga and Steve Mounie condemned QPR to a third straight loss.

Kachunga opened the scoring after 57 minutes with a close-range header from Harry Toffolo's cross.

Mounie doubled the lead from the penalty spot just three minutes later, after Kachunga had been brought down.

QPR skipper Grant Hall's first-half header against the post was as close as the visitors came to a goal.

A minute's silence was held before kick-off in memory of former Huddersfield Town player Jordan Sinnott, who died last month after he was attacked during a night out.

Once the game started, both sides had early openings with Lewis O'Brien flashing a shot wide for the Terriers before Jordan Hugill struck the side netting.

QPR then seized the initiative with the returning Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl saving well from Eberechi Eze and Luke Amos.

They went closer still after 34 minutes when Hall glanced Eze's header on to the post but the first half ended goalless.

Home defender Richard Stearman had the first opening of the second half but he could only direct his volley straight at Liam Kelly in the QPR goal.

With Huddersfield now on top, the goal arrived just short of the hour, with German forward Kachunga converting Toffolo's centre.

Kachunga was involved again three minutes later as he was fouled in the penalty area, before Mounie coolly converted the spot-kick.

Huddersfield could have won by a bigger margin were it not for the heroics of Kelly, who saved well from Emile Smith Rowe and Andy King late on.

The win sees the Terriers move up to 19th, six points ahead of Wigan who occupy the first of the relegation places, while QPR remain 17th.

Huddersfield manager Danny Cowley told BBC Radio Leeds:

"It felt like a big win; an important win. It wasn't an easy game in tough conditions which were against us in the first-half when it was a full blown gale.

"We started well but lost intensity but we came through that and sometimes you have to earn the right to play and we increased the intensity and turned the ball over further up the pitch.

"We got the first goal which gave us the confidence to go on and win the game. We scored a really good goal that lifted the players and supporters and in the second half we played with confidence and authority."

QPR boss Mark Warburton:

"You've got to take your chances and I sound like a broken record at the moment.

"We looked a very good team in the first half. We were dominant and moved the ball well, but we didn't put it away.

"We were just a little bit toothless. It's the same message I'm repeating in the last few weeks. Good teams score goals and ultimately we have to be clinical."
