FA Cup: Fleetwood Town 1-2 Portsmouth highlights

Second-half goals from James Bolton and John Marquis helped Portsmouth into the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Fleetwood.

The visitors took the lead when Bolton prodded in a Ronan Curtis corner that had evaded the Fleetwood defence.

Pompey doubled their lead five minutes later when striker Marquis bundled home another corner.

Conor McAleny pulled one back for the hosts in stoppage time, but Kenny Jackett's side held on.

Pompey were the better side throughout and could have taken the lead after just three minutes, but Bolton headed Marcus Harness' cross just wide at the far post.

Andy Cannon then fired a half-volley just over the bar as the 2008 winners continued to apply pressure, but the teams went into the interval level.

Portsmouth finally made the breakthrough as Bolton put them ahead and Marquis then appeared to get the final touch at the far post after Christian Burgess headed towards goal.

Prior to McAleny's deflected effort in the 91st minute, Fleetwood's best chances fell to Paddy Madden, who had sights of goal either side of Bolton's opener.

However, the striker fired over the bar on both occasions after twice being found by Lewie Coyle's cut-backs.

Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"We know Pompey are a good side, they're expected to get promoted out of the division, certainly on the budget that they've got, but I thought we more than matched them.

"We created some decent opportunities, but we were undone by two set-plays.

"The lads were well-versed, well-coached, well-organised, but you can't legislate for people not doing their jobs unfortunately, so we're dumped out of the cup, and it's a tough pill to swallow because I think in open play it was a 50-50 game."

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett told BBC Radio Solent:

"I thought first half we played well and had some good chances - I was a little disappointed to go in 0-0.

"I'm pleased to say in the second half we got some key moments right, which we haven't always done this season, and two goals from set-pieces is very welcome.

"In the end we needed that second goal because Fleetwood finished the game strong and put a lot of pressure on us."
