Reading 1-0 Queens Park Rangers: John Swift stunner gives Royals win

John Swift scores for Reading
John Swift's 25-yard strike for Reading was his first goal since September

John Swift's stunning half-volley earned Reading back-to-back Championship home wins as they beat QPR.

The former Chelsea midfielder found the top corner from 25 yards after Rangers only partially cleared a corner early in the second half.

Both sides created chances in an open contest, with QPR striker Jordan Hugill seeing a first-half effort ruled out for offside.

Lucas Joao twice went close to a second for the Royals as he headed one chance wide and forced a smart save from Joe Lumley with another, while the R's also had opportunities to snatch a point.

Eberechi Eze saw an effort cleared off the line by Michael Morrison after a sublime turn inside the box, while Hugill was denied on the rebound by home keeper Rafael after substitute Ilias Chair's 20-yard shot struck the bar.

And in stoppage time Rafael came to his side's rescue again, keeping out another close-range Hugill effort at point-blank range with his head.

However, Mark Bowen's side, who beat Derby 3-0 at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday, held on to extend their unbeaten run to four games and climb to 15th in the table, three points and one place below their visitors.

It also extended a sorry run for Rangers, who have now not won away on Boxing Day in 20 attempts since beating Plymouth at Home Park in 1967.

Reading began the brighter of the two sides and were only denied an early opener by an superb double save from Lumley to keep out efforts from Ovie Ejaria and Swift.

But the R's grew into the game and Hugill was visibly frustrated to have a strike ruled out when he was caught offside as Bright Osayi-Samuel delayed his cross.

They also put the Royals under intense pressure in the closing stages, but Swift's sweet finish ultimately proved the difference.

Reading boss Mark Bowen told Sky Sports:

"The save Rafael pulled off at the end was really special.

"We had some really good passages of play and in spells they came in to the game and caused us problems. It was a little bit too end to end for my liking, but I thought we deserved it.

"It was a tremendous strike by John but he is a talented player. You expect it from him.

"The lads are hungry to work and want to learn. It's been a good start to the Christmas period but we have some difficult games coming up."

QPR manager Mark Warburton told Sky Sports:

"Both halves we started off sloppy. The first 15 minutes of the first half were poor; we gave the ball away cheaply and started the second half a little bit slowly.

"But then we got going and moved the ball. We created numerous chances in the second half and we have to score. That's typical of what we have been seeing in the past few weeks.

"We are creating chances and getting into the good areas. I want the boys to get their rewards. It's frustrating. We are creating but we have to take them."
