Bristol Rovers 4-2 Southend United: Sol Campbell bemused by Shrimpers' attitude

Former England defender Sol Campbell was appointed Southend manager in October

Southend boss Sol Campbell said he did not understand "what world these guys are living in" after seeing his side throw away a two-goal lead in their 4-2 defeat by Bristol Rovers.

The Shrimpers are next to bottom of League One, with just six points from 20 games.

They took a 13th-minute lead when Brandon Goodship's low cross from the right was fired in by Tom Hopper.

It was 2-0 on 36 minutes as Stephen McLaughlin picked out Goodship with a through ball and the winger coolly beat Anssi Jaakkola with a side-footed finish.

"I said to the guys the game's not done, you've got to keep doing the same things. Then it's all out the window, players not getting back in position, not busting a gut to do the same things," Campbell told BBC Essex.

"Maybe some of the players thought the game was done, finished. As individuals and as a team, we have to recognise that you've got to be fighting for every inch of the pitch and you've got to be in position."

Jonson Clarke-Harris pulled a goal back for Rovers in the 48th minute with a low penalty after he had been fouled by Elvis Bwomono.

Eight minutes later the home side were level, as Clarke-Harris picked out Tom Nichols with a chip into the box and the ball broke for Abu Ogogo to volley past Nathan Bishop from 10 yards.

Ed Upson's fantastic right-footed volley from 25 yards flew past Bishop before he had time to move to put Rovers ahead and Alfie Kilgour then settled the outcome with an 81st-minute header from close range.

"For some reason, we don't want to get in position, we don't want to go where it hurts, we don't want to keep on running. I can understand it after 80 minutes but not just after half-time. I'm not having it," said Campbell.

"We just chucked an amazing first half out of the window. We could have gone on and won that game but we stopped doing the right things in the second half.

"We've got to look at ourselves and why we don't want to move five yards to get in position. I really don't know what world these guys are living in now. We stopped doing all the things that got us to 2-0 and I don't understand it."
