Accrington 7-1 Bolton: Wanderers boss Keith Hill bemused by Stanley thrashing

Accrington Stanley players celebrate making it 1-1 in front of Bolton's 2,679 travelling fans

Bolton Wanderers boss Keith Hill said he "doesn't understand" his team's display as they fell to their worst ever loss in the third tier with a thumping 7-1 defeat at Accrington Stanley.

Wanderers, who started the season with a 12-point penalty after entering administration, were handed a further suspended five-point deduction earlier this week for failing to fulfil two previous fixtures.

The English Football League have since said they will appeal against the "lenient" punishment, meaning Bolton could yet face further sanctions.

Despite the off-field woes, they moved into positive points with a last-minute win over MK Dons last Saturday and were backed by 2,679 supporters at Lancashire Accrington.

And it looked like their recent upturn in form and fortune was set to continue when they took an early lead through Daryl Murphy.

However, the game turned in the 14th minute when John Earl was shown a straight red for a foul on Dion Charles in the area and Colby Bishop levelled for the hosts from the spot.

Bishop then netted his second with a diving header from a Seamus Conneely cross and it was 3-1 at the break when Sean McConville volleyed home.

Jordan Clark's cross was tapped home from close range by McConville for 4-1 before Charles hooked home a fifth.

Substitute Offrande Zanzala completed Stanley's biggest-ever EFL win with a late double.

"I'm very disappointed. I didn't see it coming and I don't understand it," said Hill. "We don't want to make the situation any worse. We find ourselves in a reasonable position after working ever so hard over the past nine games and we don't want to throw it away today.

"We're still in a position to attack the league."

Despite the heavy defeat at Stanley, results elsewhere meant Wanderers remained 15 points adrift of safety with two games in hand on 20th-placed Tranmere.
