Bromley 0-1 Bristol Rovers: Pirates set up trip to Plymouth in FA Cup

Bristol Rovers set up an FA Cup second round tie at home to Plymouth Argyle after beating non-league Bromley at Hayes Lane in their first-round replay.

Jonson Clarke-Harris gave League One Rovers a third-minute lead when he scrambled Ollie Clarke's right-wing cross into the net from close range.

Bromley thought they had levelled three minutes before the break, but striker Michael Cheek was deemed to be offside before he latched on to a through ball and rounded Pirates keeper Jordi van Stappershoef.

Referee Christopher Pollard ruled out another goal for the hosts after the break, as Chris Bush's throw-in went directly into the Rovers net despite bouncing amid a crowd of players two yards from the line.

Bromley's hopes of progressing to the second round for the first time since 1945-46 were dashed early on, when Rovers captain Clarke pounced on a loose pass from Ravens centre-back Bush and put in a teasing cross for Clarke-Harris to convert amid defensive uncertainty.

Bromley, second in the National League, responded well as Luke Coulson sent an acrobatic effort over the bar and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild had a low shot deflected over the bar by Tony Craig.

Cheek netted after appearing to have beaten the Rovers offside trap in the process of latching onto Coulson's smart through ball, but the celebrations of the home crowd were cut short by the assistant's flag, although replays suggested the striker was in fact onside.

Rovers - who had lost their past three FA Cup ties against non-league opposition - held on during a scrappy second half to reach the second round for the first time since 2016-17.

Hackett-Fairchild sent two more efforts over the crossbar while another long throw from Bush almost presented another opportunity - but Cheek could not divert a knock-down goalwards from close range.
