Morton 1-0 Arbroath: Hosts ended three-game losing streak

By Chick YoungBBC Scotland at Cappielow

Greenock Morton ended a run of three straight defeats in the Scottish Championship as Reece Lyon's early strike sank Arbroath at Cappielow.

Lyon, 19, ran on to a Jim McAlister head flick in the third minute to finish past Derek Gaston and prevent Arbroath rising into the top four.

Bob McHugh came close to doubling the lead but the win lifts Morton out of the relegation play-off spot to eighth.

Arbroath, who have lost five of their seven away games, stay fifth.

Dick Campbell's men were a shadow of the team who have taken the Championship by storm, failing to threaten Morton's goal until the dying minutes in a match watched by just 1,185.

Morton manager David Hopkin: "We have a few experienced players but people forget how young much of our team is for budget reasons.

"We need to find a couple of players in their late 20s, but it was a great win."

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "Morton deserved to win, but I feel we had a two or three really good penalty claims."
