Bristol City 2-2 Wigan Athletic: Pedro Pereira rescues late draw for Robins

Chey Dunkley's downward header put Wigan 2-1 up early in the second half

Bristol City struck a dramatic late goal for the second time in five days as Pedro Pereira denied Wigan Athletic a first away win of the season.

Pereira, on loan from Benfica, headed Niclas Eliasson's near-post corner beyond David Marshall to rescue a point for the otherwise lacklustre Robins.

The hosts, who would have moved up to second in the Championship with victory, had earlier gone in front when Andreas Weimann diverted Tommy Rowe's scuffed shot into the bottom corner.

Their lead lasted just five minutes before Chey Dunkley smashed into the roof of the net to deservedly pull the visitors level a minute from half-time.

Dunkley completed the turnaround early in the second half, heading Joe Williams' corner past Daniel Bentley, only for Pereira to score his first Bristol City goal with four minutes left.

The Portugal Under-21 right-back's late heroics followed Josh Brownhill's 98th-minute winner against Charlton Athletic on Wednesday.

It also meant Wigan fell short of only their second away victory since August 2018, with a 2-1 win at Leeds United in April their only success in that time.

They had been good value for their lead, with Gavin Massey wasting a great chance to make it 3-1 when he was denied by Daniel Bentley when clean through.

Ultimately, however, they had Marshall to thank for avoiding an even more frustrating outcome as the former Cardiff City goalkeeper turned Weimann's shot onto the bar in the final minute.

City remain sixth in the table, three points off leaders West Bromwich Albion, while the Latics are 18th.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol:

"With 30 minutes to go I couldn't see it. I didn't think we had enough about us today. There just wasn't enough spark.

"I was quite pleased with the last 15 minutes because again we showed our fitness, we showed our energy and probably a bit of guts to get an equaliser when we may not have deserved it.

"The fans will naturally be frustrated because we had the chance to go second and I appreciate that, so I apologise."

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook:

"We deserved to win at Derby in midweek and again today. I am really enjoying watching us play, but instead of six points we are looking at one.

"Against good teams you have to take your chances at key moments. That is not happening for us at the moment - but I can't fault my players.

"We believe in open, attacking football and that is what we produced against a very good Bristol City side."
