Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Stoke City: Massimo Luongo scores Owls' winner

Massimo Luongo scored his second game-winner for Sheffield Wednesday in consecutive home matches

Massimo Luongo's second goal in three matches helped Sheffield Wednesday beat Stoke City in the Championship.

The Potters, who were looking for a third successive victory, lost Peter Etebo and Cameron Carter-Vickers to injury inside 25 minutes.

Luongo latched onto Morgan Fox's long ball, and aided by substitute Liam Lindsay's error, raced clear to put the Owls ahead.

Stoke's best chance came from Lee Gregory's header but he was denied by Cameron Dawson's point-blank save.

The Owls move up to third in the Championship table after 13 matches, while Stoke remain in the relegation zone.

The game was lacking in rhythm in the opening 30 minutes, with Stoke not helped by the injuries to Etebo and Carter-Vickers, which saw Mark Duffy and Lindsay pressed into action earlier than anticipated from the bench.

Stoke keeper Adam Federici made the game's first save to deny Adam Reach after he cut inside the box from the right-hand side.

Luongo, who scored the only goal in the Owls' previous home game against Wigan, took advantage of Lindsay's failed attempted clearance to slot past Federici low into the right-hand corner.

With the first half coming to a close, Lindsay was then involved at the other end as he put a close-range volley over from a Stoke corner.

The Potters improved after the break and thought they had equalised from a well-worked free-kick, but for Dawson's stunning save from Gregory's close-range header.

Stoke ended the game with 10 men as Tom Edwards limped off the field through injury after manager Nathan Jones had used all three substitutes.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It's been very similar in the last two games - Cardiff and tonight. Very good in the first half, but making it difficult for ourselves in the second.

"In both second halves, we could have done better. We could have been better with the ball in those periods. But there are some really good things that have come out of both games. Sometimes you have to dig in, and we've done that.

"The most important thing is that we've taken points from both."

Stoke City manager Nathan Jones told BBC Radio Stoke:

"I'm flabbergasted. There's nothing in the game.

"We've not played as well as we'd like to in the first half, but we shouldn't go in at half-time 1-0 down.

"The error was the difference between the two sides. We should have had a penalty, we had a great chance to equalise as well, but their 'keeper made a fantastic save. That's the story of the game, really."
