Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin double sees off Championship side

Dominic Calvert-Lewin celebrated his 100th Everton appearance with two goals as Marco Silva's side swept past Sheffield Wednesday into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

After an underwhelming start to the Premier League season, Blues manager Marco Silva resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes to his side - though three of the five players he brought in, Calvert-Lewin, Alex Iwobi and Djibril Sidibe contributed to the goals.

Sidibe's cross-field ball allowed Calvert-Lewin to clatter in a superb volley off the underside of the Wednesday bar from eight yards.

And the 22-year-old forward then rounded off the scoring four minutes later when he turned in Iwobi's cut-back from close-range.

Sam Winnall had an early chance to give the hosts the lead but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford superbly saved after Tom Davies' poor back pass.

Had Winnall tucked that chance away the momentum of the contest may have shifted towards Garry Monk's side, which featured eight changes from the team that started against Fulham in the Championship on Saturday.

Instead it proved a welcome return home for Sheffield-born Calvert-Lewin, who came through the academy ranks of Wednesday's fierce city rivals Sheffield United before moving to Merseyside in 2016.

The England Under-21 forward, who has now scored eight goals in eight games in the EFL Cup, was a threat throughout and could have had a hat-trick - missing possibly his easiest chance of the night by directing a header straight at home goalkeeper Cameron Dawson from five yards.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk: "You are always disappointed not to get the result but there were some very positive things for us tonight.

"The difference was taking the chances. I thought we competed really well and if we could have been more clinical it may have been a different story.

"There were lots of good things and some of those lads haven't had a lot of minutes - I wanted to have a look at some of them for the first time and I thought we competed so well."

Everton manager Marco Silva: "We reacted well tonight and now we move on to Saturday. When we signed [Alex] Iwobi we knew he could play behind the striker and tonight was a good moment to see him there. He can play in both positions and do well in both.

"The full focus was on this game. Since the first day we were so clear about our goals - three competitions and the cups were important and we've shown that tonight. It was important for Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] to score twice. He did well to score in important moments. It gives him confidence. Let's hope he continues in that way.

"We controlled the game in the second half without creating as many chances but we move into the next round."
