Bristol City 2-2 Middlesbrough: Tommy Rowe rescues late point for Robins

Britt Assombalonga
Britt Assombalonga's strike at Ashton Gate was the 100th league goal of his career

Tommy Rowe scored a late equaliser as Bristol City denied Middlesbrough a first away win under manager Jonathan Woodgate in an end-to-end contest at Ashton Gate.

Rowe headed Callum O'Dowda's cross past Darren Randolph, after Boro themselves had come from behind to lead.

The Robins went in front just before half-time when Kasey Palmer nodded Niclas Eliasson's superb delivery into the bottom corner.

Taylor Moore then diverted Paddy McNair's low ball into his own net, before Britt Assombalonga completed the turnaround for Middlesbrough with a low shot into the corner.

But Rowe's second Bristol City goal ensured Lee Johnson's side were able to extend their unbeaten Championship run to five matches.

Both teams had struck the post before Palmer's opener, with the two sides mustering 40 attempts on goal between them in a wide-open match.

Prior to Moore's unfortunate own goal, Bristol City had looked well set for a fourth successive victory, but his equaliser changed the entire tone of the match.

Boro took control after he made it 1-1, creating numerous chances before and after the 100th goal of Assombalonga's career put the away side in front.

The Robins lost right-back Jack Hunt and midfielder Han-Noah Massengo during the game, further adding to Johnson's injury concerns, with record signing Tomas Kalas one of a number of first-team players currently out of action.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson: "I'm disappointed because I felt the game was there for us to win.

"It was far too open from my point of view. We didn't get our distances right and that was down to poor communication, with a number of young players in the team.

"With injuries to players like Tomas Kalas, Korey Smith and Adam Nagy, the balance of the team is not quite as I want it.

"We played some fantastic attacking football but gave them too much space to do the same. We are still a work in progress and overall I'm pleased with the start we have made."

Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate: "I thought we were the better side and deserved to win. It was a top-class performance and our best of the season so far.

"I haven't a bad word to say about any of my players. Bristol looked to counter-attack us and did so effectively in the first half, but we tweaked a couple of things at half-time and I thought the lads were outstanding in terms of effort and the way we approached the game.

"Of course, I'm unhappy with conceding from two headers. Defenders seem to want to mark areas rather than opponents these days and space never scored a goal.

"There were some tremendous performances. Britt Assombalonga's missus gave birth on Thursday and I wish she would do so every week because he was immense."
