Reading 0-2 Charlton Athletic: Addicks go second in Championship as impressive run continues

Newly-promoted Charlton moved up to second in the Championship with victory at Reading.

George Puscas had two good efforts for the hosts before the break in an even but goalless first half.

On-loan Jonathan Leko broke the deadlock soon after half-time when the Charlton forward's deflected effort spun in from the edge of the box.

The lead was doubled when Lyle Taylor converted a penalty after Chuks Aneke had been brought down in the area by Pele.

Lee Bowyer's Addicks - who beat Sunderland in May's League One play-off final - have now won four and drawn two of their six games since returning to the second tier.

They are now a point above third-placed Leeds, who lost to a late goal at home to leaders Swansea City, who have gone two points clear.

Both sides had chances in the first period. Leko forced a good early save from Reading's Rafael Cabral, while Lucas Joao's overhead kick went just over the bar at the other end.

New signing Puscas hit the bar midway through the opening period and he also forced Dillon Phillips into a good save in first-half stoppage time after breaking through.

Reading failed to create many clear-cut chances after the break as Bowyer's side took command, although John Swift's powerful effort bound for the top corner was saved by Phillips in the 88th minute.

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer:

"We deserved to win. The first half was quite even but we were the better side in the second half. We dominated the game and created a lot of chances.

"We should have been more clinical. We should have had another two or three goals and we would have done if our players had made the right decisions. Lyle Taylor was there for two tap-ins but we decided to shoot instead of just sliding the ball to him.

"The good thing is that it's a clean sheet and two goals. But it should have been more."

Reading manager Jose Gomes:

"We prepared for the game very well and, in the first half, my players showed our plan was good. We had a good defensive dynamic. We really blocked out Charlton. We created clear goal situations in the first half but we missed them.

"In the second half, after their goal, it looked like my team was scared because of the things that were happening. That's why I changed my wing-backs and replaced them with more offensive players.

"With my player changes, this is the magic thing in football. If you play PlayStation and you change the players and you lose, you can repeat the game. Here, we can't. But I don't regret doing it."
