West Bromwich Albion 3-2 Blackburn Rovers: West Brom win five-goal thriller

Blackburn celebrate
Blackburn led after 25 seconds but conceded three first-half goals in defeat

West Bromwich Albion recovered from conceding inside the first minute to secure a pulsating Championship win over Blackburn Rovers.

Rovers stunned the home crowd when Lewis Travis took advantage of Kyle Bartley's under-hit pass to Romaine Sawyers, allowing Bradley Dack to take possession and slot home from just inside the area after 25 seconds.

West Brom levelled through Matt Phillips, who chased down a Matheus Pereira through ball and showed great strength to hold off Greg Cunningham and sweep the ball past Christian Walton, and then took the lead through Jake Livermore, who placed a superb finish into the bottom corner from Pereira's lay-off.

The Baggies extended their lead in the 40th minute through Grady Diangana's sublime dinked finish after beating his marker on the left, and although Bradley Johnson was able to scramble one back for Rovers on the stroke of half-time, West Brom saw out the second half and claim their first home win of the season.

Former West Brom manager Tony Mowbray made two changes at the break against his former club as Rovers looked to draw level, introducing Joe Rothwell and John Buckley for Bradley Johnson and Sam Gallagher.

His side immediately went on the attack and had a 51st-minute penalty appeal turned down by referee Tony Harrington when Bradley Dack went down under the Bartley's challenge.

Harrington again incurred the wrath of Rovers fans when he disallowed Dack's headed finish for a foul on Baggies' goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Darragh Lenihan struck the outside of the post following a well-worked free kick as Blackburn continued to press for an equaliser, but West Brom were able to steady the ship and almost sealed the match with a counter-attack 20 minutes from time, but Pereira's shot flew inches over the bar.

Filip Krovinović, Livemore and Phillips all went close in the closing stages and Bartley somehow blasted over from yards out.

However, the Baggies, who have now come from behind to claim points in five of their six league games this season, were not punished and saw out the win to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic told BBC WM:

"We deserved it, but we have to manage the game better. It was a bad 15 minutes - we didn't even start today and of course it affects us, that early.

"Fortunately we responded and then from the first goal until the end of the half basically it was excellent in every aspect of the game. Three-one should have been enough but we should have been even more up.

"Of course I'm not happy with their (second) goal, there were elements of a foul in it and it was a cheap one. We knew they were going to come fired up for the second half, they did and we had difficulty to control the game."

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray:

"We have to be better with the ball, we have to be braver. We have to keep the ball off good teams because if you keep giving it to back to good teams they keep coming and they're going to score.

"I think that was what happened in the first half - we kept giving them the ball back, but we kept it better in the second.

"In the second half we took the sting out of them by keeping the ball, which didn't allow them to build up momentum."
