Ipswich Town 1-1 Sunderland: Paul Lambert hails 'rock and roll' football

Ipswich manager Paul Lambert said his side were out to play "rock and roll" football after their 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Portman Road.

Roared on by a vocal home crowd, Ipswich got off to a dream start in the 15th minute when Danny Rowe's touch found Luke Garbutt, who squeezed the ball home from a tight angle.

But a second-half equaliser from Lynden Gooch earned Sunderland a point in an entertaining encounter featuring the type of football Lambert is keen for his side to play.

"We'll go for it," he told BBC Radio Suffolk. "Too many people come here and don't try to play but we'll go for it. We're playing rock and roll football.

"I'm really happy with the game. Their goal was a terrible mistake but everything we did was very, very good and I couldn't ask any more of the team.

"What an atmosphere we had and that's the great thing that people are coming back to support us."

In a dominant first half, Ipswich went close to doubling their advantage through Garbutt but his shot was saved by Jon McLaughlin after 37 minutes before the Everton loanee was forced off through injury shortly afterwards.

The Blues had further chances as Cole Skuse's effort was cleared off the line before James Norwood's hooked volley flew wide of the Sunderland goal.

But the visitors improved after the break and Marc McNulty out-muscled Town skipper Luke Chambers by the touchline in the 64th minute and his cross from the left was slammed home by Gooch for the visitors' equaliser.

Alan Judge saw a shot saved by McLaughlin in stoppage time as both sides pressed forward in the final minutes, but neither could find a winner.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross told BBC Radio Newcastle: "The first half was a long way short of where we need to be. We had a frank discussion at half-time because we were behind to a team who did the fundamentals much better than us.

"But then we managed to do the basics better and won the second half to take something from the game.

"What it emphasises is that even if you have players with quality - which we have - you have to the simple things well."
