Ayr Utd 4-2 Greenock Morton: Ian McCall's side start with win

Ayr United made a fine - if nervous - start in their target of making the Scottish Championship play offs with a win over Morton.

Ian McCall's side seemed to be cruising after goals by Michael Moffat, Luke McCowan and Alan Forrest.

But Morton's Reghan Tumilty rammed in after Ross Doohan dropped a cross, and Nicky Cadden dragged it back to 3-2.

However, substitute Craig McGuffie quelled the fightback with a coolly lobbed fourth in the pouring Ayr rain.

It was a fine start for a radically-reshaped Ayr side, who have lost the likes of Lawrence Shankland, Liam Smith and Michael Rose from the team that reached the play-offs last term.

Ayr United manager Ian McCall: "We could have scored five or six and Forrest's goal was a real thing of beauty.

"I don't know if we will be able to recreate that kind of football in January when the pitch isn't like that but we were always comfortable."

Morton manager David Hopkin: "We lost bad goals defensively but their third was well offside.

"I can't believe we lost another defender. We need a break of luck, but I was proud of our attitude."
