Inverness CT 1-0 Dunfermline Athletic: Home side finish third as Pars lose again

Inverness Caley Thistle's Nathan Austin
Nathan Austin scored the only goal

Inverness Caledonian Thistle finish third in the Scottish Championship after Dunfermline Athletic slumped to a fifth consecutive defeat.

Nathan Austin's 35th-minute goal was enough for the Highland side to leapfrog Ayr United, who were held at home by Alloa Athletic.

It came after goalkeeper Cammy Gill was unable to deal with a Stuart Morrison back-pass.

Home goalkeeper Mark Ridgers denied Kallum Higginbotham and Bruce Anderson.

Meanwhile, Tom Walsh came close to doubling the lead when his shot struck a post.

Caley Thistle travel to Ayr on Tuesday for the first leg of their promotion play-off quarter-final, with the return at Caledonian Stadium on Saturday.

Dunfermline finish seventh, just three points ahead of Queen of the South and Falkirk in the bottom two places after eight games without a win.

'We'll go into the play-offs with confidence' - reaction

Inverness Caley Thistle assistant manager Scott Kellacher: "We knew what finishing third would bring into the club - every penny counts. We work on a budget, we have to live within our means.

"It's been a big ask but the boys have done terrific. Their performances haven't been brilliant but we've got the results.

"We'll go into the play-offs with a bit of confidence now that we are on a run of games."

Dunfermline Athletic head coach Steve Crawford: "It's not been good enough in terms of getting points on the board in the last nine games.

"Dunfermline are looking to get out of the championship by winning promotion or in the play-off positions. We regroup and re-evaluate over the summer."
