Middlesbrough 1-2 Brentford: Benrahma goal gives Bees away victory

Said Benrahma scores for Brentford
Said Benrahma's winner was his sixth goal in five games

Brentford scored twice in three second-half minutes for a stunning comeback victory which dents Middlesbrough's fading automatic promotion chances and keeps alive their own Championship play-off hopes.

Ashley Fletcher's early tap-in put Boro ahead at the Riverside, but they were then second best for long spells.

The Bees, who had only managed one away league victory in 15 matches this season, dominated possession and twice had goals ruled out in a first half when Sergi Canos also hit the bar.

Canos and Said Benrahma again went close for the visitors after the break before Ryan Shotton's own goal levelled the scores.

And Benrahma soon swept home a second to earn a victory which takes Brentford up to 12th, just six points off the play-off places.

Middlesbrough stay fifth, four points clear off Bristol City, who dropped to seventh after losing to Leeds United. Second-placed Leeds are second, 12 points ahead of Boro.

Boro's afternoon started in ideal fashion when Fletcher scored his third goal in four home matches after keeper Dan Bentley had initially saved from both Britt Assombalonga and Mo Besic.

Brentford responded impressively but the hosts, who had not conceded a home league goal in their previous three matches, just about held out.

Maupay had a header ruled out for offside and a Canos strike was not allowed to stand because of a foul by the French forward.

Canos also hit the bar with a fierce strike after a neat move before the break.

Fletcher almost made it 2-0 with a header after the interval, but the Bees' pressure finally told.

Henrik Dalsgaard did well to capitalise on a George Saville error and the cross was sliced into his own net by Shotton.

And Dalsgaard was also involved in the winner, running onto a Romaine Sawyers pass to tee up Benrahma.

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis told BBC Tees:

"We're disappointed obviously but Brentford are a good side. We got off to a great start, then we should have had a penalty - one of three definite penalties.

"Refs have to get those decisions right and how he's got that wrong I don't know. He has a clear view and that's three definite penalties in a home game and we didn't get any.

"I think the results this weekend have given everyone near the top of the table a bit of zip but we've just got to get as many points as possible in the remaining games."

Brentford boss Thomas Frank said:

"We knew it was coming and it would be nice to get a win against one of the big teams and this was like a big win. We knew it would be difficult and we are very pleased with the way we did it. I am proud of the boys, they did very well.

"I am not being arrogant but we knew we could do well because we are good on the ball. We are on a good run, we are a good team, we have big confidence and big dreams, but the most crucial thing is to concentrate every day.

"We controlled the game, didn't give it away too easily and had opportunities. We are normally a weak side, so all the experts say, but we were definitely not weak today. We showed real character."
