Watch: Fog rolls in to halt Rugby Park game

Kilmarnock and Motherwell will meet on Thursday to discuss a rearranged date after their Scottish Premiership match was abandoned because of fog.

Neither side have a game this weekend, with Kilmarnock's next match against St Mirren not until 11 March, while Motherwell host Hamilton on 9 March.

Referee John Beaton said he had "no choice" after fog enveloped Rugby Park towards the end of the first half.

"It was very difficult for the players to see the ball in the air," he said.

Despite bringing the teams out again after the interval, Beaton soon halted play before consulting with his assistants and both managers.

He took the two teams off the field and, after a further delay, the decision was taken to abandon the match with no prospect of the fog lifting.

"The fans couldn't see the game and my assistants couldn't see the far side of the pitch either," Beaton added. "The safety of the players was my main concern, especially with the ball coming out of the sky.

"It was important we gave it a chance to lift but we quickly realised it was just impossible. So we had no choice but to abandon the match."

An unmarked Tom Aldred had earlier headed the visitors' best chance wide, with Eamonn Brophy curling an early effort narrowly off target for Kilmarnock.

'We gave it every opportunity' - Beaton on abandonment

'It's the right call' - reaction

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson: "It is frustrating because I thought we were dominating and probably should have gone into the break a goal up. That might have made it more interesting to cancel the game so we are probably glad it was 0-0 at the time.

"John [Beaton] gave it every chance but both sets of fans pay a lot of money to watch the game and if they can't see it, obviously it is pointless."

Kilmarnock assistant boss Alex Dyer: "It was the right decision by the ref, for the safety of the players, and the supporters can't see. So it is the right call."
