Hull City 2-1 Millwall: Tigers hold on for first win in four

Jarrod Bowen in action for Hull City
Jarrod Bowen has now scored 17 goals in all competitions for Hull this season including 11 in his past 12 appearances

Jarrod Bowen inspired Hull City to their first victory in four games as they narrowly beat Millwall at the KCOM Stadium.

The hosts opened the scoring after eight minutes when Kamil Grosicki's cross was only half cleared allowing Markus Henriksen to fire the ball towards Jarrod Bowen, whose slight touch diverted the strike into the Millwall net.

But the Tigers were soon pegged back midway through the first half when they failed to deal with Steve Morison's ball across their six-yard box which teed Shaun Hutchinson up for a tap-in finish from close range.

Just before half-time, Bournemouth loanee Marc Pugh restored City's lead, controlling Todd Kane's cross before striking the ball into the far corner.

Nigel Adkins' side were coming off the back of a 5-1 loss away to Brentford last Saturday and had won just one of their past six Championship fixtures.

But the home side starter the stronger and nearly went ahead after 22 minutes through a curling effort from Grosicki which sailed narrowly wide of the far post.

Millwall were nearly level just after half-time as Ryan Tunnicliffe's saw his half-volley kept out by a superb save from Hull goalkeeper David Marshall.

The hosts nearly doubled their advantage through Grosicki's thunderous strike which hit the near post before ricocheting off Lions goalkeeper Jordan Archer and going behind for a corner midway through the second period as the hosts pushed for a third goal.

Marshall then did well to deny Millwall striker Morison in the final 10 minutes before home defender Reece Burke cleared Jake Cooper's header off the line.

The Tigers now rise to 11th place in the Championship table while Millwall remain in 20th.

Hull City boss Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I think it's a big three points to be honest. I was very disappointed at the weekend and we've come against a very difficult opposition tonight.

"I'd like to congratulate the crowd because we knew it was going to be a challenging game. At the start we needed to get the tempo going.

"The supporters were doing everything they could to lift the players. That really makes a difference."

Millwall manager Neil Harris:

"They were two really poor goals we gave away. We are frustrated because we looked so solid and reliable for a couple of months.

"We scored a goal, we were a real threat on the counter-attack. Then we give a debacle of a second goal away.

"It was a strong performance in so many ways and there were positives to take out of it. I am really pleased with how they applied themselves and how they played."
