Wigan Athletic 1-1 Ipswich Town: Joe Garner scores late Latics equaliser

Joe Garner scored a dramatic late equaliser against his former club as Wigan Athletic denied struggling Ipswich Town a rare away victory.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the first half as Jonas Knudsen saw red for a foul on Leon Clarke, who had been through on goal.

But Ipswich went in front when Collin Quaner was tripped by Chey Dunkley and Will Keane found the net from the penalty spot.

However, Garner netted in the 90th minute to snatch a point for the Latics when he turned home Reece James' in-swinging cross.

Ipswich were close to ending a run of seven away league games without a win, but they stay nine points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Championship.

The result also meant Wigan's winless run stretched to three games, but they retained their five-point cushion above the relegation places courtesy of Garner's goal.

Ipswich's task had been made harder when Knudsen was dismissed but Wigan initially struggled to make their extra man count and the Tractor Boys capitalised when Keane converted his spot kick.

They were without manager Paul Lambert on the sidelines as he began a two-game touchline ban after being sent off in their defeat against Norwich, and could not hold on against a resilient home side.

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Manchester:

"Ipswich started the game very well, they came with an attacking intent, but the sending off had a big influence on the game.

"You felt at that point that the likelihood was that we should go on and win the game, and Ipswich getting the goal very quickly, it was set up that Ipswich would defend very deep and narrow, and rightly so.

"It frustrated us for long periods, I didn't feel we looked like scoring to be truthful, so the goal came as a massive relief, but Ipswich must take great credit out of the game because I thought they were excellent."

Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert told BBC Radio Suffolk:

"I thought we started the game brilliantly, I thought we looked really, really good.

"The sending off changed a lot in their favour, but I'm really proud of the team, we kept going and still looked threatening.

"We should have won it, we should have seen it through with a few minutes to go, but with 10 men it was difficult.

"We played a really good game and it was one lapse when lads were running on empty."
