West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Norwich City: Jordan Rhodes earns point for Canaries

Jordan Rhodes scored his first goal since 10 November to earn Norwich a point at West Brom

Substitute Jordan Rhodes grabbed an 83rd-minute equaliser for Norwich City at West Bromwich Albion, but it was not enough to keep the Canaries in the Championship's top two.

Sheffield United's victory over QPR pushed the Blades above Norwich and up to second in the table with a superior goal difference.

Dwight Gayle's 14th goal of the season from Mason Holgate's cross looked to be the deciding moment for much of the game.

But Norwich improved after a slow start and Kenny McLean and Rhodes, who had both been introduced from the bench a couple of minutes earlier, combined to earn a draw.

However, the visitors needed a fine stoppage-time save from goalkeeper Tim Krul to stop Albion's Hal Robson-Kanu scoring a dramatic winner.

The two sides had scored 102 goals between them this season before Saturday's game - and the Baggies had won 4-3 at Carrow Road in August - so it was no surprise that the deadlock was broken early at The Hawthorns.

On-loan striker Gayle, back in the West Brom side after two and a half weeks out with a hamstring injury, gave the hosts a 12th-minute lead.

Krul kept out attempts from Holgate and Gareth Barry, while Norwich's top scorer Teemu Pukki poked the best of his three efforts wide of the post after the interval.

West Brom would have gone third in the Championship had they held on, but Scotland international Rhodes popped up with his first goal since 10 November to deny them all three points.

West Brom manager Darren Moore told BBC WM 95.6: "I'm really pleased for the team and with the performance. We went for the three points, everybody could see that.

"But, really I'm looking at the performance as a whole, which was fantastic. I thought we limited Norwich brilliantly with our work off the ball and when we had possession, we used it well at times and created chances.

"A second goal was just eluding us, but when we were 1-0 up, I felt that if we kept doing the right things at the right time, we'd be OK.

"They gambled and it paid off for them today."

Norwich City manager Daniel Farke told BBC Radio Norfolk: "Away at West Brom is always a tough place to come and to come away with a point after going behind, is always a top result.

"We have to say it's probably a fair result, but we had chances to win the game which leaves a bit of disappointment.

"But, it's still a top result. The two teams are close together.

"I'm really pleased for Jordan Rhodes coming off the bench and showing the end product with his goal. It's great that he and Kenny McLean were able to come on and fulfil my ideas."
