FA Cup: Bolton Wanderers 5-2 Walsall highlights

Josh Magennis scored a hat-trick as Bolton came from behind to beat League One Walsall in the FA Cup third round.

Walsall looked poised to upset against their Championship opponents when Andy Cook headed in a Matt Jarvis cross.

But Wanderers responded with close-range finishes from Clayton Donaldson and Magennis, while Jon Guthrie's own goal made it 3-1.

Two further Magennis goals wrapped up the win after Bolton's Mark Beevers had deflected in a George Dobson shot.

Victory provided some cheer at the end of a testing week for Bolton, who were thrashed 6-0 by Hull in the Championship on Tuesday and then hit by a registration embargo as they owe at least one outstanding creditor.

Goalkeeper Remi Matthews, midfielder Gary O'Neil and striker Christian Doidge were the three players affected by the sanction and Bolton hoped the trio would be granted permission to play.

Matthews has since returned to parent club Norwich and Bolton said O'Neil was absent because of injury.

A bad start to 2019 looked to be getting worse for Wanderers when Cook, who later hit the crossbar for Walsall, kept up his record of scoring in every round of this season's FA Cup.

But the hosts were much improved after half-time and, inspired by winger Craig Noone, who was involved Bolton's first four goals, they avoided a third successive third-round exit.

Bolton manager Phil Parkinson:

"This win is a huge boost for us, especially being 1-0 down at half-time.

"We conceded a bad goal and we had to show character to keep playing. We did that and after the defeat at Hull and the negativity flying round the club in the last few days, it was important we got the win.

"Financially, it's a big boost and let's hope we get a good draw to give everyone a real lift."

Walsall manager Dean Keates:

"We spoke about starting the second half brightly, as we did the first, but Bolton have a corner, we don't get into our slots quickly enough and it becomes too easy.

"We got shellshocked again and it needs to be addressed. We spoke about it through the week and we need to regroup into our shape a lot quicker.

"We were accountable for the first three goals but the fourth one should have been our foul for us on the edge of their box."
