Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Birmingham City: Che Adams salvages point for Blues at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday caretaker boss Lee Bullen
Owls caretaker boss Lee Bullen has guided his side to a four-game unbeaten run

A second-half Che Adams strike saw Birmingham City come from behind against Sheffield Wednesday and deny Owls caretaker boss Lee Bullen a third win in four games since replacing Jos Luhukay.

Wednesday had the better of the first half, with Adam Reach volleying over and Michael Hector sending an effort narrowly wide.

Steven Fletcher then put the Owls ahead with his first goal in eight appearances, hooking the ball home after Tom Lees headed down Barry Bannan's ball into the box.

But Adams denied the hosts victory after the restart, running through and showing good control and composure to fire the ball past keeper Keiren Westwood.

Steve Bruce is widely expected to be appointed as Owls manager at some point in January and Bullen's run will see him inherit a side increasing in confidence.

They would have had another victory but for the heroics of Blues keeper Lee Camp, who made numerous saves to earn his side a point and keep them within four points of the play-off places.

Camp's sprawling stop kept out a Reach strike and then he pushed away a Fletcher header before a superb double save from substitute Atdhe Nuhiu in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Birmingham did threaten on occasions, with substitute Craig Gardner going closest to snatching victory with a late free-kick that hit the post.

Wednesday caretaker manager Lee Bullen: "I think we dominated for about 80 minutes, we had a 10-minute spell in the second half during which we got punished.

"In the first half I felt we were the team with the legs, the team with the energy, the team with the quality.

"We're disappointed with the goal. The reaction to losing that goal I thought was second to none. Credit to Birmingham when you are not playing well the next best thing is to make sure you don't lose the game."

Birmingham manager Garry Monk: "I thought Lee was the best player on the pitch today. He's been fantastic since he's come in.

"He was a big reason why we managed to keep that point.

"This is a really tough period. This is a hugely demanding period and we don't have the biggest of squads. We weren't as fresh as we would have wanted."
