Sam Ricketts made a winning start as Shrewsbury Town manager, as he guided them into the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy with a 2-1 victory over League One rivals Walsall.

Goals from Alex Gilliead and Doug Loft gave Shrewsbury their sixth win in seven matches.

In the other ties, Alex Jakubiak's solo goal helped Bristol Rovers fight back against Swansea Under-21s to win 2-1.

Southend also progressed, beating Luton 4-2 on penalties after it ended 1-1.

The last remaining second-round tie between Rochdale and local rivals Oldham Athletic is to be rearranged, after Wednesday's match was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Both teams go into the hat for Saturday's third-round draw.

Rochdale will release details of the rearranged match at the Crown Oil Arena when available.
