Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 Rotherham United: Joao double denies Millers victory

Lucas Joao (number 18)
Joao (number 18) has scored eight goals in the Championship this season

Two goals from Lucas Joao saw Sheffield Wednesday fight back from 2-1 down to draw with Rotherham in the South Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough.

The Portugal striker put the Owls ahead just before half-time when he drilled the ball past keeper Marek Rodak.

But straight after the break Michael Smith latched on to Will Vaulks' ball over the top to equalise before Richard Towell fired in from outside the box.

Joao then made it 2-2 as he headed in from substitute Daniel Pudil's cross.

A draw will do nothing to ease the pressure on Owls boss Jos Luhakay with the Dutchman's side having won only once in nine league outings and fans calling for him to be sacked at full-time.

Rotherham have now gone 36 away games without a win but could have come away with all three points had Smith found the net with two headers in the first half.

Jon Taylor also had two efforts, firing wide from the edge of the box before seeing another effort turned away by Wednesday keeper Cameron Dawson.

Joao's opener, which saw him race on to Adam Reach's long ball before coolly slotting home, was his side's only effort of the first half.

But the Millers needed only 15 seconds of the second half to level matters as Smith outran the home defence to fire into the bottom corner and just nine minutes later Towell made it 2-1 with a shot that squirmed under Dawson.

Joao nodded in to level before Vaulks and Towell both went close for the visitors, who had to settle for their ninth draw in 12 games.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay on some fans chanting for him to be sacked:

"I am not deaf. But I will not give an answer to this. I cannot give an answer to this.

"This period is not easy for the team, they are expecting more, there is more pressure on my team than the opponent.

"They can win, but we must win and that is a different situation when you start the game.

"We have to go further in your work with the team and you hope that every new game you find your way. Next week we have a new chance."

Luhukay on the game:

"I think the draw at the end was the right result for both teams. We scored the first goal at the right time, you thought it would give us confidence for the second half.

"In the second half the game turned in the first 10 minutes in a positive way, but we came back into the game and deserved the 2-2 draw.

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I thought our performance over the 92 minutes was pretty impressive. We got done with a long ball first half, my young defender (Zak Vyner) went to ground which we begged him not to - they're humans, they're going to make mistakes.

"We built them up at half time, asked them to have a right go and send our fans home happy.

"Our second half performance was really good and over the course of the game I thought we edged it."
