Chelsea Women 1-0 Reading Women: Ji So-Yun fires Chelsea up to fourth

Chelsea leapfrogged Reading to climb to fourth in the Women's Super League table with a narrow win at Kingsmeadow.

The victory was the Londoners' fifth in a row, stretching their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions.

Reading's Fara Williams hit the bar from a first-half free-kick, having earlier curled narrowly off target.

But Ji So-Yun placed in to the bottom corner from Ramona Bachmann's ball to put Chelsea ahead after the break and they held off the Royals' late charge.

Magdalena Eriksson had struck the woodwork early on for the hosts, who are now eight points behind leaders Arsenal following the Gunners' 2-0 loss at Manchester City.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes:

"I thought this was one of our best performances all season. It was outstanding. You have to understand this team is very good at making it difficult for us.

"We dominated for second balls, we used the width well and improved as the game went on. The only thing that flatters them is the scoreline.

"I said at half-time we needed to start better than we finished the first half, we got into great areas and we were overplaying instead of just taking responsibility."

Reading manager Kelly Chambers:

"We've just fallen short, I thought the performance from the girls today was outstanding, we just need to make sure now that it doesn't affect us going into next week.

"We caused our own problems today and that's frustrating. We need to take the performance over the 90 minutes and keep building on that into the Liverpool game next week.

"We know Chelsea are a strong side with fantastic individuals, but they're very structured and they showed that today. We knew we'd be limited in front of goal and we just need to be better with the opportunities that we do take."
