Birmingham City Women 2-1 Yeovil Town Ladies: Blues send Yeovil back to bottom

Birmingham City held off a late rally from Yeovil Town to stay on the heels of the Women's Super League's top two.

Lucy Staniforth's cool finish and Charlie Wellings' 25-yard rocket looked to have set Blues up for a routine win.

However, Emily Syme pulled one back in stoppage time and Yeovil almost rescued a point but Nicola Cousins' effort was cleared off the line by Aoife Mannion.

City stay third, five points behind leaders Arsenal, but Yeovil slip to the foot of the table after Everton's win.

Birmingham City forward Lucy Quinn:

"We didn't play the football that we wanted to. We were a bit frustrated, but I think it's testament to our character that we remained resilient and came away with the points.

"We controlled the game, and as a forward I know that our forward unit aren't happy that we didn't take the chances that we had.

"We needed to do that to put the game to bed early on and really play the style of football that we wanted to play.

"I think we need to work on taking our chances. We've been scoring lots of goals recently, which is good, but we can always score more - especially if we're creating the chances in the first place."

Yeovil Town goalkeeper Megan Walsh:

"It wasn't our best performance. We know we could have done better but in the last 10 minutes we showed that we're in this league for a reason and can compete.

"It was disappointing to fall behind when we did. We need to start putting pressure on earlier. We need to get at them and play our football.

"We need to start like we mean to go on and play how we did at the end. The gaffer will let us know what we need to work on, but we need to start a lot brighter than we did today and keep it going."
