Millwall 0-2 Birmingham City: Blues win after Ryan Leonard red card

Birmingham City's Michael Morrison
Michael Morrison scored his second goal of the season

James Meredith's own goal and a second-half strike from Michael Morrison saw Birmingham City beat 10-man Millwall.

Full-back Meredith bundled the ball into his own net after Che Adams' shot came back off the inside of the post.

Ryan Leonard was then shown a second yellow card after just 30 minutes for a late lunge at Maikel Kieftenbeld.

Morrison made the points safe in the second half with a close-range finish after Lions' goalkeeper Jordan Archer failed to deal with a near-post corner.

It was a third away win of the season for Garry Monk's side and breaks a run of three games without victory.

Adams' strong run and shot created the opening goal that went in off Meredith - with Lukas Jutkiewicz ready to pounce - before Morrison scored his second of the season after the break.

Millwall failed to score at home for the first time since April and were forced to play two thirds of the game with 10 men after Leonard received a second booking only eight minutes after his first caution for a challenge on Adams.

The Lions remain outside the relegation zone only on goal difference, while Birmingham climb to within four points of the play-offs.

Millwall manager Neil Harris told BBC Radio London:

"We've been outstanding here.

"The problem we've had is where we've not got the results on the road, that then puts pressure on the home games.

"We have to make sure we're better away and that starts Sunday at Bristol."

Birmingham City manager Gary Monk told BBC WM:

"It's the best response from Sunday. We kept a clean sheet, looked dangerous and got the three points.

"11 v 11, we looked very good and dangerous, we set up well, we counter-attacked well but when they went down to 10-men they made it difficult for us.

"The second half was quite scrappy but coming here, you're going to have to fight and put that effort in and we did that well."
