WSL: Everton Ladies 3-3 Brighton Women

Brighton's Ellie Brazil
Brighton's Ellie Brazil scored two almost identical goals from set-pieces to earn a draw

Brighton Women earned their first point of the Women's Super League season after a thrilling fightback at Everton.

Remarkably both sides came into the contest without a goal to their name this season, but Brighton's Danielle Buet set the scene by scoring a 20-yard screamer after just three minutes.

Simone Magill teed up Dutch youth international Inessa Kaagman for the equaliser before Gabrielle George headed in unmarked on the stroke of half-time to turn the game on its head.

Everton looked to have victory sewn up when Chloe Kelly showed composure to beat Marie Hourihan.

But Brighton substitute Ellie Brazil - daughter of Nottingham Forest academy manager Gary - headed a brace in the space of three minutes from set-pieces to ensure a share of the spoils.

Brazil had a chance to complete her hat-trick and cap a remarkable comeback at the death, but Toffees keeper Kirstie Levell saved superbly at her feet.

Everton manager Andy Spence:

"These mistakes in games are not only something that we've spoken about in connection to this game, they have caused us issues in other games, and for too long really in truth.

"They need to stop because we are losing games because of it, and this is a loss for me, because of the way we finished, it is not good enough.

"I do not see this as a point gained, I see it as points lost by ourselves.

"We didn't play poorly on the whole, it was just naive mistakes that keep hurting this team, and they will cost us if we don't think our way through matches in future.

Brighton manager Hope Powell:

"They showed some real character in the closing stages of the match, some resilience in our play and it proves that the building blocks that we have been putting in place are working and we are moving forward.

"It felt like a win for us, the fact that we got a point and we scored three goals, it felt like a win at the end.

"I will be emphasising the need for character to the players ahead of the Manchester City game. I think that we were very well organised today to stifle Everton and their style of play.

"We know that City will probably have more of the ball than we do, so the focus will be on taking care of the ball when we do have it and being organised."
