Bolton Wanderers 1-2 Queens Park Rangers: R's get rare away win at troubled Trotters

Luke Freeman gave the visitors a first-half lead
Luke Freeman was an influential performer for Steve McLaren's side

Queens Park Rangers won on the road for the first time in nine games to condemn Bolton to defeat in the week they avoided administration.

Forward Luke Freeman scored the opener and then created another for Steve McClaren's side at the University of Bolton stadium, where the hosts this week agreed a rescue deal to pay off their main creditor.

Freeman slammed the ball home after a brilliant pull-back by Nahki Wells in the first half, then crossed for Eberechi Eze to score from 12 yards after the break.

Trotters substitute Josh Magennis pulled one back with a 20-yard free-kick, but it was not enough for Phil Parkinson's spirited side who dominated the closing stages.

It meant the Londoners have taken seven points from the last nine available and extended their unbeaten run to four games across all competitions.

Wells had formed a new strike partnership with on-loan Brighton forward Tomer Hemed, and they created the first chance of the match as the Israeli played his team-mate in only for him to shoot wide.

Then the R's had another opening when Angel Rangel's low cut-back was met by Eze but his first-time shot from the edge of the box went over the bar.

The impressive Wells played a part again as his ball allowed Freeman to slam the ball home for the opener.

In reply Bolton substitute Yanic Wildschut, on for the injured Sammy Ameobi, zipped past Toni Leistner and delivered a cross into the box which Craig Noone fired narrowly over the bar.

But then Eze doubled the visitors' lead. Freeman did the work down the left and his cross picked out the forward who smashed a shot into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Northern Ireland striker Magennis, who started on the bench after sustaining a calf injury on international duty, replaced Jason Lowe and it proved a shrewd switch as he hammered his free-kick through the wall and into net to cut the deficit.

It lifted the hosts who began to mount plenty of pressure, as a swerving long-distance shot from Pawel Olkowski was well saved.

But Rangers held firm to record their first away victory of the season, and will look to continue that upturn in form when they host Millwall at Loftus Road on Wednesday.

It was the end of a difficult week for Wanderers which also saw the death of former owner and honorary president Eddie Davies.

QPR manager Steve McClaren said:

"It is a huge three points for us. It was too much hard work (at the end) though. We should have finished the game just after half-time.

"We got a good second goal, then we had enough transitions to finish it and get a third.

"It's never going to be easy if you give away a silly free-kick right on the edge of our own box and all of a sudden the kitchen sink started coming into our box.

"We had to defend for our lives, put our body on the line and win headers, and the team did that.

"But it's the first away win of the season and we need to build on that next week."

Bolton manager Phil Parkinson said:

"Being 2-0 down at home is always difficult but we kept going and got back in it with a terrific strike from Josh (Magennis) and very nearly equalised with Oztumer towards the end.

"The positives are that we kept going right to the very end, which you'd expect.

"But we kept driving on to get back in the game but it is disappointing to lose at home."
