Jermain Defoe in action against MK Dons
Former England striker Jermain Defoe was making his first start of the season for Bournemouth

Bournemouth maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable win over League Two MK Dons to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Lys Mousset beat one defender and fired the Premier League side's first goal after a pass by Ryan Fraser.

Fraser, the only survivor from the side that started Saturday's 2-2 draw with Everton, made it 2-0 following a superb break involving Jordon Ibe.

Former Liverpool player Ibe added the third with a fierce strike.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe stated before the game that he believed his side was capable of winning a trophy this season.

They were embarrassed by League One Wigan in last season's FA Cup third round but this was a clinical performance by a much-changed Bournemouth side.

Summer signings Diego Rico and Jefferson Lerma both made their first appearances.

Rico almost scored, striking the bar with a free-kick at 2-0.

MK Dons, second in League Two, were unbeaten in six matches before this game.

Substitute Osman Sow went close to a late consolation goal with a shot on the turn that fizzed just wide.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe: "I'm very pleased. There were some great goals, but being picky as I am, I would like to have seen us keep up our levels in the second half.

"We were really intense - good in and out of possession. The game slowed down in the second half but overall we were very good."

MK Dons boss Paul Tisdale: "It was always going to be a tough game. I thought we did well - I'm really proud of the players.

"Yes, we've lost the game and we feel a little bit flat because of that but we've gained a lot. Am I going home distraught? No. I'm actually going home more pleased than unhappy."
