Preston North End 2-2 Stoke City: Peter Crouch salvages draw for Potters

Stoke City striker Peter Crouch celebrates his goal against Preston
Former England striker Peter Crouch scored less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute for Stoke to net the 200th club goal of his career

Gary Rowett's wait for a first win since taking charge of Stoke City goes on after his side took a point from a lively Championship encounter at Preston North End.

The hosts went ahead five minutes before the break through Paul Gallagher, who converted emphatically from the penalty spot after Tom Edwards handled Darnell Fisher's cross from the right.

Stoke were behind for less than two minutes, defender Erik Pieters levelling with a driven half-volley, but North End went in ahead at half-time as Graham Burke volleyed home after latching on to Callum Robinson's sliced effort in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Veteran striker Peter Crouch diverted Joe Allen's free-kick in to make it 2-2 just two minutes after coming on as a substitute, meaning the Potters have taken two points from their first three games following relegation from the Premier League.

Preston, whose seventh place in the Championship last season was their highest finish in the league pyramid since 2008-09, started brightly and Robinson nodded wide before England goalkeeper Jack Butland had to be alert to pull off a double save to deny Alan Browne.

At the other end, good positioning from Lilywhites keeper Declan Rudd denied Saido Berahino a first goal since February 2016 as he kept out the forward's diving header.

It was a physical match at Deepdale, and Preston were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men just after the half-hour mark when Gallagher's forearm to the throat of Wales midfielder Allen was not seen by referee Andy Madley.

Crouch's back-header past Rudd was the 200th goal of the 37-year-old's club career, having first netted in a second-tier game for QPR against Gillingham in September 2000.

After that, neither side came close to claiming a winner, although Preston defender Andy Hughes sent a header over the bar from a corner.
