Speed merchant, nothing more. This world Cup is exciting but the reason is because there is a distinct lack of quality. Hence the ‘big teams’ struggling, hence the Mbappe’s being called superstar’s
Uh more sycophantic rubbish. He ran quick a couple of times, big deal.
It's hardly as if Mbappe was an unknown before this tournament. I also think it is rather unfair of journalists to keep placing so much of Argentina's failure on Messi. In my lifetime I can only think of one team that was dragged to glory by one man - that was Maradona's Argentina in 1986. Even then, he had an excellent team around him....
Taxidriver - On the money. In my 50s & lucky enough to see lots of the greats & Maradona is No1 (Cruyff 2nd of the ones I've seen), not just 'that' goal against England, but also the one against Belgium in the Semi. Then there is what he did with Napoli, all after a bad leg break at Barca. Sadly no CL back then to fill his boots up against cannon fodder. Maradona as a man? Come back to u!
I think people on here have missed the point. The GOAT will never exist. Different eras different game. Heavier balls and boots different management techniques. How can you compare Eusabio to Ronaldo? Maradona to Messi or Pele to Neymar, Ronaldo or Remario? Every great player was great during their time. There will never be a greatest of all time.
489. Posted by Taxi Driver on2 minutes agoThe Belgian defence wasn't too shabby either! But yes, it is a matter of opinion. The real fact remains that Maradona was banned 3 times from football for drug abuse (one during a WC!). There is no way he can be included as a GOAT just as all other sporting drug cheats that followed him (Armstrong, Johnson, Joiner etc)
Open your eyes. Maradona ran rings around an English defence which wasn't too shabby in a pretty tight space and absolutely made mugs of them all.You have your opinion and I have mine.Move on.
487. Posted by Taxi Driver onJust nowDon't be daft... he beat 3 players from inside his own half as full speed. Two of them were by close footwork.Tell me, is Ben Johnson regarded as an Olympic champion? Or Lance Armstrong a world record holder in cycling? The only reason why Maradona didn't get a ban in 86 is because he wasn't tested but he did admit being on drugs. Not a GOAT.
I was wondering if you were going to mention that goal.Said Owairan goal 1994. Definitely up there, but if you look closely it didn't need the close control that Maradona's goal required and wasn't executed with supreme technique. It's one of the great goals because he ran so far and beat several players, but no sorry mate, not on same level as Maradona's goal.
485. Posted by Taxi Driver onJust nowSorry TD but you are wrong there. I forgot one goal that out-classed all others. The Saudi Arabia player (forget his name) against Belgium in 1990. Now THAT was a great goal!Maradona reach his peak with drugs, pure and simple. There is a reason why drugs are banned in sports. In total he got banned 3 times for drug abuse. That is not a GOAT mate.
@BurnBrae - Archie Gemmil's goal was a great world cup moment. But Maradona's goal vs England is without question the greatest solo goal in World cup history.Maradona reached a higher level in 1986 than any player has reached since. For sure he is no Angel and for that he deserves some negative criticism. No he didn't do it for 10 years, but in that year he was the greatest ever.
Low-class journalism - again.Desperately looking for a new hero or poster boy.He did three things (all very well), but the game was not at all about him. It was a great team performance.I'm sure he will go on to be a top player, but he isn't yet.
I don't understand all this talk... Messi this Messi that... Just love the game for what it is. We all got to see one of the greatest players in our life time.Messi isn't the team, It takes 11 players to win a WC not one. Leave the guy alone and stop all the criticizing. It doesnt say anywhere that a player needs to win a WC to be considered the goat, if anyone finds that feel free to post here.
“Passing of greatness” really?! Mbappe scored about 20 goals this year in a poor French league and scores a few in the World Cup and all of a sudden he’s a great...Non story.
476. Posted by Taxi Driver on2 minutes agoHis goal against England was no better than Archie Gemmil's goal against Holland in 1978 or Baggio's goal in 1990 . Besides, one goal does not make a GOAT.I was not aware that the GOAT status required only goals scored in the 2nd round of WC's??Maradona cheating on while on drugs since 1985 is not a stat... its a fact!
