George Oakley scored twice as Inverness triumphed

Inverness Caledonian Thistle missed out on a Premiership play-off place despite comfortably defeating Greenock Morton.

Iain Vigurs had already hit the crossbar before George Oakley bundled in the visitors' first.

Oakley netted his 12th of the season when his low strike squirmed in at the near post.

Gary Harkins and Robert Thomson both hit the woodwork for Morton in the second half, then Nathan Austin scored Caley Thistle's third from close range.

But with Dunfermline beating Dumbarton, it is the Pars who finish fourth and join Dundee United and Livingston in the play-offs.

It is a bittersweet end to the season for John Robertson's men, who with the win at Cappielow made it 12 games unbeaten.

Oakley's opener came from Liam Polworth's corner, with the Englishman one of several bodies arriving to meet the ball and ensure it crossed the line somehow at the near post.

Charlie Trafford provided the pass for Oakley to score Caley Thistle's second. His 16-yard shot looked like it would not trouble Morton goalkeeper Conor Brennan, but it found its way into the net at the near post.

Morton pushed to get back into the match at the start of the second half as Harkins' free-kick was touched on to the crossbar by Mark Ridgers, then Thomson's drive across goal hit the base of the far post and bounced to safety.

Caley Thistle sprang the offside trap to take their afternoon's tally to three, Polworth playing in Austin to lob it over Brennan and tap in from a couple of yards out.

Defeat for Morton, coupled with Queen of the South's win at Brechin, means the Greenock side dropped to a final league position of seventh.

Post-match reaction

Greenock Morton manager Jim Duffy: "It was bitterly disappointing.

"We put up a terrific performance last week against St Mirren but today we weren't even close to competing.

"We made some basic errors and Inverness showed that momentum and a bigger desire."

Duffy praised outgoing chairman Douglas Rae, who is stepping down after 17 years in the role, and will now become honorary club president.

"His unquestionable commitment should never be underestimated and what he's contributed long before I came here," he added.

"The club is in a good place in terms of infrastructure and most of that is down to the chairman."

Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager John Robertson: "The players were superb and we kept Dunfermline honest. We give a massive congratulations to Allan Johnston and his team.

"We've thrown everything at them. In nine games we've won eight and drawn one - that's the pressure we've put on Dunfermline - and they've withstood that.

"We look towards what [champions] St Mirren have done as inspiration. They had a terrific run towards the end to stay up [last season], added a couple of bits of quality and then went on to win the title."
