Reading 0-4 Ipswich Town

Reading defender Chris Gunter reacts to conceding a goal against Ipswich
Reading have won just one of their past six league games

Reading failed to secure their Championship status following a heavy home defeat by mid-table Ipswich.

After a goalless first half Martyn Waghorn broke the deadlock with a spin and shot after being well found by Jordan Spence.

And Waghorn returned the favour soon afterwards, playing in Spence, who scored with a stunning shot.

Substitute Freddie Sears tapped in the third goal before Callum Connolly completed the scoring in stoppage time.

Vito Mannone was the busier of the two keepers in the first half, saving twice from Ipswich winger Mustapha Carayol before denying Waghorn 10 minutes before the break.

Bartosz Bialkowski was called upon twice in quick succession early in the second half, saving Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's header and a Sone Aluko shot just before the hour mark.

Four goals in a frenetic final 20 minutes leaves Paul Clement's Royals just two points above the Championship relegation zone, with their final fixture away at promotion-chasing Cardiff City on Sunday, 6 May.

Reading manager Paul Clement:

"At the end, we got what we deserved, we were not professional for the entire game.

"I can't ever remember a situation where I've had to speak about a performance like that.

"It was shameful and embarrassing from the point where Ipswich got their first goal to the end of the game.

"It was completely unacceptable and I'm very disappointed and sorry for our fans."

Ipswich caretaker boss Bryan Klug:

"That was for everyone involved in our club, right through the staff to the players,

"The players have responded well after the massive disappointment of last weekend (a 4-0 loss to Aston Villa).

"It's obviously a better feeling today and I thought that we played quite well."
