Dundee United and Inverness Caledonian Thistle took a point apiece in a hard fought Scottish Championship affair at Tannadice.

Iain Vigurs gave the visitors a deserved first-half lead when he nodded home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Thomas Mikkelsen diverted Scott McDonald's shot past Mark Ridgers to equalise for United after the break.

Ridgers denied Willo Flood and Paul McMullan as the Tangerines lost further ground on leaders St Mirren.

Third-placed United, who have three games in hand over the two sides above them, now trail the Buddies by 19 points and remain seven off Livingston.

Caley Thistle are eighth with Dumbarton now four points behind them, albeit having played a game more.

The Highlanders started brightly at Tannadice with George Oakley sent clean through on goal and his weak effort allowing Harry Lewis to save with some ease.

But John Robertson's side moved into the lead when Liam Polworth floated a corner in from the right and Vigurs rose above the home defence to score.

And they almost doubled their advantage before the break. Oakley found space on the right and his cross was destined for Connor Bell before a wonderful sliding clearance by Mark Durnan.

McDonald came on for Paul Quinn at half-time and his shot from the angle of the 18-yard box appeared to be heading wide but Mikkelsen stuck out his boot to deflect the ball into the net.

Flood's chip from fully 30 yards was dipping just under the crossbar before Caley Thistle keeper Ridgers clawed the ball away.

Then substitute McMullan created space 20 yards out and his effort looked destined for the top corner before Ridgers managed a magnificent one-handed stop.
