New England women's boss Phil Neville watches Liverpool and Bristol City in the WSL
Phil Neville has previously coached at Manchester United, Valencia and England Under-21s, but has only managed one game - at Salford City, a team he co-owns

Newly appointed England women's head coach Phil Neville watched Liverpool cruise to victory over Bristol City in Women's Super League One.

The match was the first top-flight game played since the ex-Manchester United and England defender took charge.

Neville was appointed on Tuesday, with the 41-year-old apologising for past controversial tweets about women the following day.

Beth England scored both goals for as Liverpool consolidated third place.

England, an international at junior level who is yet to earn a senior England cap, has now struck six times in two games and taken her tally to eight goals in nine appearances this term.

Forward Jess Clarke, who won the last of of 52 senior England caps in November 2015, pressed her claim for a recall by setting up the opener.

Neville, whose appointment the Football Association has defended despite his lack of familiarity with the women's game, had plenty of interest in the match with Liverpool fielding three players - goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain, captain Gemma Bonner and defender Alex Greenwood - who were involved in the warm-weather training camp which the new boss oversaw in Spain last week.
